There are also plenty of places to visit when you fancy taking things at a slower pace.

We’ve put together some of our favourite ideas to help you plan your days and make the most of your time in Aviemore. Some activities are perfect for a crisp, sunny autumn morning, while others are ideal when the weather turns a little more Highland!

So, whether you’re visiting for a few days or staying a little longer, read on for inspiration for your perfect autumn itinerary in Aviemore.

Take a Walk Through the Autumn Colours

You don't have to be an experienced hillwalker to enjoy the Cairngorms in autumn. One of the simplest pleasures is pulling on your walking boots, grabbing a flask and heading into the woods. Rothiemurchus Forest is a wonderful place to explore, with its ancient Caledonian pinewoods, lochs and mountain views.

A walk around Loch an Eilein is a particular favourite. The woodland surrounds a beautiful Highland loch, with the atmospheric ruins of a 13th-century castle sitting on an island in the middle. In autumn, the changing colours reflected on the water make this a particularly memorable walk.

For something a little easier, head to Loch Morlich and enjoy a gentle stroll beside the water while taking in the magnificent Cairngorm Mountain backdrop.

Sometimes the simplest days out become the ones you remember most.

Explore the Cairngorms on Foot

If you're looking for something a little more challenging, autumn is also a great time to explore some of the area's longer walking routes.

The Cairngorms offer walks to suit a wide range of abilities, from woodland and lochside trails to more demanding mountain routes. Craigellachie Nature Reserve, right on the edge of Aviemore, is another lovely option, with woodland trails leading to viewpoints overlooking the village and surrounding mountains. For those heading higher into the mountains, make sure you check the weather and mountain conditions before setting off. Autumn weather in the Highlands can change quickly, so good footwear, warm layers and waterproofs are always worth packing.

Take a Journey Back in Time

Autumn is also a lovely time to slow things down and enjoy the Strathspey Steam Railway.

Departing from Aviemore, the heritage railway winds its way through woodland and countryside towards Boat of Garten and Broomhill, with wonderful views of the Cairngorms and River Spey along the way. There is something wonderfully nostalgic about settling into a traditional railway carriage and watching the Highland landscape pass by the window.

It's also a great option for a day when the weather isn't quite ideal for walking, allowing you to enjoy the scenery while keeping warm and comfortable.

Look a Little Closer

Autumn is a great season for wildlife watching too.

The Cairngorms are home to an amazing variety of wildlife, and you never quite know what you might spot while exploring the forests and lochs. Red squirrels and roe deer can be seen around the woodland, while specialist wildlife experiences offer the chance to see some of the area's more elusive inhabitants.

Rothiemurchus is a particularly good place to combine a walk with wildlife spotting, while the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre offers a very different experience for families and animal lovers. Remember to take your time. Stop, listen and look into the trees – you may be surprised at what is watching you back!

Explore on Two Wheels

If walking isn't your thing, why not explore the area by bike?

The Cairngorms is home to some of the best cycling in Scotland, from relaxing family friendly cycle paths to adrenaline downhill single tracks for the experienced mountain biker. Check out our biking page. And if you don't have your own bikes with you, there are local bike-hire options available, making it easy to get out and explore. Autumn's cooler temperatures can make cycling particularly enjoyable, especially when the forests are showing off their changing colours.

For Those Looking for a Little More Adventure

Of course, the Cairngorms aren't just about gentle walks and scenic views.

If you're looking for something with a little more adrenaline, there are plenty of ways to experience the landscape from a different perspective. Around Rothiemurchus, you can find a range of outdoor activities and adventures, while local providers offer opportunities to try activities such as canoeing, kayaking, gorge walking and white-water rafting.

Whether you're an experienced outdoor enthusiast or simply fancy trying something completely new, an autumn visit can be the perfect opportunity to get out and have an adventure.

Discover a Little Highland History

If you fancy something a little slower, there are plenty of places where you can discover more about the history and heritage of the area.

The Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore is a fascinating day out, recreating Highland life from the past and giving visitors a glimpse into how people once lived and worked.

With historic buildings, traditional crafts and plenty to explore, it's easy to spend several hours wandering through the museum and discovering what life was like in the Highlands in years gone by.It's also a great option for a day when the weather isn't on your side.

When the Weather Turns…

Don't let a Highland shower put you off. One of the joys of an autumn holiday is that you don't have to fill every minute. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, head into Aviemore for a coffee, visit an attraction, take a scenic drive or simply spend some time enjoying your holiday home. Then, when the rain clears – as it often does – pull on your waterproofs and head back outside. The landscape after rain can be spectacular, with waterfalls flowing, mist sitting across the hills and the air feeling wonderfully fresh.

Come and Make Your Own Autumn Memories

Perhaps that is what we love most about autumn in Aviemore. It isn't necessarily about doing something spectacular every day. It might be a walk through golden woodland, spotting a red squirrel, sitting beside a loch with a flask of coffee, taking the steam train through the countryside or simply coming back to your holiday home after a busy day and enjoying dinner together.

The mountains are waiting, the forests are turning gold, and there is plenty to explore. Autumn in Aviemore really is something rather special.

And when the day is done, you can look forward to coming back to your comfortable Silverglades holiday home, putting your feet up and planning tomorrow's adventure.
